Insights from ‘Plastbubbel’ at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency
Posted 2024-02-13A little while ago, representatives from Emballator attended ‘Plastbubbel’, the annual conference on sustainable plastic usage organized by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. Mats Jeppsson, our Innovation Manager, was one of three that represented Emballator during the day, capturing a range of insights.
Plastbubbel serves as a meeting ground for discussions on sustainability and resource efficiency in plastic usage. It was evident that the issues on the agenda are crucial for navigating the challenges facing our industry.
Discussions throughout the day revolved around several key questions, sparking interesting and important dialogues. Some of the significant and complex issues raised on the agenda included:
- Why is it so challenging to break old habits and mindsets?
- Why do we not change despite awareness of the impact of materials like plastic?
- How can we be better at reusing and break the cycle of constantly creating new things?
Perhaps the most significant insight of the day was that comprehensive systemic changes play a crucial role in addressing our global sustainability challenges. At the same time, sustainable innovation extends beyond technological solutions and includes our individual sense of responsibility.
To achieve effective reuse and recycling, norms and standards need to change. Technological advancements, such as the latest sorting techniques, offer a significant source of hope and potential to significantly reduce plastic waste and promote a “Zero waste mindset.”
Inspiring examples underscored how customer loyalty can be strengthened through initiatives around circular packaging and reuse. Circular solutions, characterized by simplicity, provide consumers with the opportunity to actively integrate sustainable habits into their daily lives.
In conclusion, the transition from thought to action is crucial and requires everyone to take responsibility. Smooth actions and simplicity are key factors in motivating and promoting sustainable behaviors. The positive reports on plastic packaging shared are encouraging, but at the same time, we are reminded that our journey towards sustainability is a continuous process requiring sustained commitment.
We look forward to the future, where we continue to be a significant force behind sustainable innovation, actively contributing to the creation of a more responsible and sustainable world.
