Plasma coating – a solution for sustainable packaging
Posted 2025-03-20At Emballator, we always strive to be at the forefront of innovation and sustainability. Therefore, we are proud to present plasma coating – a groundbreaking technology that not only improves the performance of our products but also contributes to a more circular packaging.
Plasma coating is a pioneering method that offers many benefits for both production and the quality of the final product. It is a process where an ultra-thin layer, so thin that it is measured only in nanometers, is applied to the surface using plasma. Through a process where gas is subjected to electrical discharge in a vacuum, a thin protective layer is created on the inside of the packaging. This creates a strong, durable, and protective coating that enhances its barrier properties. It makes it more resistant to chemicals such as solvents and alkylate gasoline, without altering the properties of the plastic. This improves the product’s performance and lifespan.
What are the benefits of Plasma Coating?
Plasma coating is not just a technical achievement – it is a revolution for recycling and sustainability. Traditional multi-layer packaging, often used to prevent leakage of chemicals and gases, consists of several materials that are difficult to separate. This can make it harder to recycle. With plasma coating, we can achieve the same barrier protection but with a mono-layer solution that is 100% recyclable. We can also manufacture canisters with recycled plastic, which also meet recycling requirements, and we look forward to getting them UN certified soon.
Improved durability: Plasma coating provides a robust surface that protects against wear and corrosion better than traditional methods.
Increased efficiency: Plasma coating can be applied quickly and evenly, improving production speed and quality with a smoother surface that facilitates labeling.
Adaptability: The technology can be customized to meet specific needs and requirements, making it ideal for various types of packaging.
Emballator Europak in Finland applies plasma coating using microwave radiation. We can adapt the machines to bottles and canisters from 250 ml to 30 liters.
With the upcoming regulation, PPWR’s requirements for plastic recycling, sustainable solutions become important, and we have implemented plasma coating in several of our production lines. Our plasma-coated canisters are already tested and ready to meet future requirements. We have also received UN approval for our 5-liter canister, which means it meets high safety and quality standards.
