Emballator Switches from PP to PE to Reduce Packaging Fees and Improve Sustainability
Posted 2025-04-28We are proud to show a significant change in our packaging materials that will benefit both our customers and the environment. Emballator has selected several caps where we are switching materials from PP (polypropylene) to PE (polyethylene). This change is part of our commitment to sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and improved product performance.
Regulations and cost reduction
The new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations (PPWR) and packaging fees (NPA) in Sweden make it more advantageous to use mono-material in packaging. Many bottles and jugs are currently made of PE, and by achieving mono-material packaging, the packaging receives better classification and lower packaging fees compared to caps made of PP and other packaging made of PE. This results in significant cost savings for our customers by substantially reducing packaging fees. It is a step towards achieving our long-term goals and providing better value for our customers.
Sustainability goals
Emballator has set ambitious sustainability goals for 2025 and 2030. Our goal is to achieve 100% recyclable packaging by 2025 and to reduce the use of virgin fossil-based plastics by 2030. PE is more compatible with these sustainability goals, helping us reduce CO2 emissions and move towards a more sustainable future.
Improved product performance
The transition to PE caps allows us to improve the design and thus counteract any problems related to broken hinges and difficulties in closing the caps. This change will improve the functionality and durability of our caps, leading to better product performance overall.
Implementation timeline 2025
- Q1/Q2 will begin the transition to PE caps, we are rebuilding existing tools.
- Q2/Q3 Initial production with an older tool for customer testing.
- Q4 Full-scale production with a new tool during Q3/Q4, with the old tool as backup to ensure business continuity.
Switching from PP to PE in Emballator’s caps is a strategic decision that benefits both our customers and the environment. By reducing packaging fees, improving sustainability, and enhancing product performance, we are taking a significant step towards achieving our long-term goals. We believe this change will provide significant benefits for your company and help us all move towards a more sustainable future.
