Inspiring Lecture on Sustainable Packaging at Arcada University of Applied Sciences

Posted 2024-11-28

Petter Hammarberg talks PPWR

We are delighted to share an inspiring and educational event that recently took place at Arcada University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki. Peter Hammarberg from Emballator was invited to speak in the “Sustainable Packaging” course and shared his expertise on sustainable packaging from the perspective of a plastic packaging manufacturer.

Peter introduced Emballator and explained what sustainable packaging entails, as well as Emballator’s climate strategy and sustainability goals. He also highlighted the important PPWR regulation on packaging and packaging waste. The students gained a deep understanding of where we stand today, what we are doing to improve, and the challenges ahead.

Peter explained how sustainable packaging has minimal impact on the environment throughout its lifecycle. He emphasized the use of renewable, biodegradable, or recycled materials, designing lighter and more efficient packaging to reduce material usage, ensuring that packaging can be easily recycled or reused by consumers, and the importance of educating consumers about the sustainable practices behind the packaging.

Another key point was the PPWR – Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation. The students learned that by 2028, the EU Commission will review and present requirements for bio-based plastics. By 2030, certain products, such as labels and bags for plastic fruits and tea bags, must be compostable, and designs should be minimized in size and weight to the necessary extent.

After the presentation, a lively 30-minute discussion followed, something that is not so common during guest lectures. Peter expressed his joy in discussing with the engaged students:

“It was very interesting and enjoyable to discuss with the students. Their questions and insights really show how knowledgeable they already are in both logistics and sustainable packaging.”

The students showed great interest in how the industry works, especially around topics such as raw materials, recycled plastics, and ISCC+. They particularly appreciated getting a comprehensive view and having complex topics explained in a simple and understandable way.

At Emballator, we are proud to contribute to the education of future experts in sustainable packaging and look forward to more such inspiring meetings.
