Successful recycling project at Emballator Mellerud
Posted 2022-01-04Nothing is wasted at Emballator Mellerud. 1,750 tonnes of plastic raw material are now recycled every year. Waste that has been given a new life in the form of a new premium packaging.
Emballator Mellerud specializes in bottles and cans for chemical products, pharmaceuticals, and food. Often customized and with a focus on brand-building designs expressed by the choice of plastic material and decor. Emballator Mellerud’s offering to customers has a strong focus on sustainability, for example post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic when possible.
But, perhaps even more important, is to do your own homework, says Emballator Mellerud’s CEO, Joakim Johannesson:
“For the moment we are running a project with internal recycling. We have established routines for collecting the surplus material that arises when we trim the packaging, or from packaging that has beauty defects or has been damaged in some way. We are simply not that quick to throw away and are carefully considering how the material can be used again.”
It is not as easy as it sounds. From a quality and safety point of view, it is important that the right qualities and the right colors are recycled and used for the right kind of packaging. Therefore, a careful sorting takes place before the production waste is grinded for storage and to be used again. After that, the system keeps track of what recycled material is on the shelf and when it is possible to integrate it into production again.
A little has made a lot; Emballator Mellerud recycles 1,750 tonnes of plastic material waste every year. Material that has entered a new life cycle phase – in the form of new premium cans.
“This is a smart way of managing resources that is both environmentally friendly and a more economical handling of the raw material. Therefore, we will continue to further develop new ideas in the areas where it is possible”, says Joakim Johannesson.
