Emballator Innovation Center is testing new bio-based material

Posted 2021-03-16

A bio-based material made from lignin, a residual product from Scandinavian woods, is being tested at Emballator Innovation Center for packagings.

Together with RenCom, the producer of this specific material, Emballator Innovation Center is creating a new mix with bio-based material. Emballator wants to decrease the volume of fossil-based plastics and with this collaboration a step is being taken in the right direction.

“We are creating a special compound that is customized for our products. We want to have the highest lignin share as possible to decrease the carbon footprint”, says Mats Jeppsson, Innovation Manager at Emballator Innovation Center.

Creating a material that is recyclable and circular is important for Emballator. The carbon dioxide emissions will be lower compared to virgin plastics for this material, but the exact amount depends on the share of lignin in the end-result.

“This is a great opportunity for us to lower the amount of fossil-based plastic in our products. This will also be a complement for our other eco-friendly products. In the first step we see this mostly for our products in the paint and chemical segments”, says Mats Jeppsson.

The lignin material from RenCom is produced of a by-product from paper production and is a combination of lignin and natural oil.

“We have chosen some key applications and are looking for companies in those fields, Emballator is a great company in Sweden that shows interest in trying sustainable materials like Renol. Our material Renol is bio sourced and shows great performance even when implemented in high content, up to 50%, for different products”, says Thomas Roulin, Product Manager at RenCom.

During 2021 Emballator Innovation Center will continue to test and develop new materials for their products.
